Safe and warm: airway management and hypothermia prevention in veterinary dental anesthesia - it’s a team effort

Stacey Parker, Perry Referrals, Burty’s Boutique Veterinary CPD

Dentistry is something we are involved with every single day - but this cannot happen safely without anaesthesia. Both the Veterinary Surgeon and the Veterinary Nurse are involved with the patient undergoing dental treatment - primarily the nurses role will fall within the remit of monitoring the anaesthesia and recovering the patient but the surgeon is the one responsible for the patient and making clinical decisions- so it really needs to be a collaborative team effort.

This session will show you how we can easily make small steps that will lead to huge improvements- primarily for our patients standard of care- but also in reducing the stress and anxiety that can come alongside anaesthesia for patients undergoing dental/oral surgery/treatment. This presentation will succinctly cover two main concerns we tend to experience with anaesthesia for dentistry.
• Airway safety and management
• Preventing and managing hypothermia

You will leave this session with many take home points- ready to put into place within practice - I may even tempt you to enjoy the anaesthesia aspect of dentistry- and feel comfortable using cuffed ETT in feline patients!
